
I was in the 2nd Grade when the Space Shuttle Challenger launched and ended in tragedy, killing all seven heroes on board. We watched the launch from our classroom. That moment in Mrs. Roark’s class changed my life and I still get goosebumps when I think back to that startling image on the TV of a thing so beautiful and seemingly perfect break up into a fireball. May their souls find peace knowing that they advanced our journey to the stars and our journey as human beings.
Here is a line from President Ronald Reagan’s speech about the tragedy…
"We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."
Among the crew was Christa McAuliffe, scheduled to be the first teacher in space as well as the first "civilian" (non-aviator)
in space. Students like myself worldwide had expected to watch her deliver a
science lesson from space on television. Instead, we
watched the tragedy that changed my generation.
Look up into the sky today and think of those seven dreamers, parents, heroes and the one teacher.
