SC Treasurer Ravenel Busted for Selling Crack

ravenel.jpgWow.

South Carolina’s Treasurer, Thomas Ravenel (a Republican, I might add) has been arrested by SLED for dealing crack cocaine.

What an idiot.

From The State in Columbia:

State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel has been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, federal and state authorities announced at a news conference at SLED headquarters this afternoon.

The Charleston Republican raised millions of dollars to unseat long-term Democratic incumbent Grady Patterson in November.

Ravenel, 44, is a millionaire real estate developer and the son of Arthur Ravenel Jr., a powerful South Carolina politician who served in the General Assembly and the U.S. House.

As treasurer, Ravenel is responsible for handling the state’s finances and investments. He also holds a seat on the powerful State Budget and Control Board, which controls much of the state bureaucracy. His salary is $92,007.

And we wonder why SC has so many budgetary problems. We’ve literally got Republican crackheads (OK, it didn’t say he was taking crack… just selling it) running our state government.

I could go on and on about how many problems our state has while bozo’s like Ravenel are looting the treasury (literally), but the real damage is that children in SC will see these types of abuses of power by their state government.  SC has a long and cherished history of placing a high degree of importance on state government, so when kids see people in power as the corrupt idiots that they are, it either causes them to become cynical, loose hope or become apathetic… which will not lead to the kind of future leaders that SC needs.

Actually, local news is saying he was using and giving out to others. So, distribution, not trafficiing.

Should we bother with a trial or just storm his office and string him up?

How about the other local politicians and well known dignitaries that played in the snow with T-Rav. I noticed that the P&C has very little about this story, jeez I wonder why. Who are they trying to protect. I hear this story hits close to home with them, those in the know, know what I’m talking about. The party in the battery, the hidden cameras, those who flipped and mentioned names. A good investigative reporter could have a field day with this story and probably sell a screenplay. City Paper and The State-keep on top of this story because you own it. The P&C doesn’t want to get dirty with this one.

The federal mandatory sentencing for first offenders is 500 grams or more for a 5 year mandatory sentence.

    Under SC law 44-53-370

between 400-500 grams of cocaine is a mandatory sentence for first time offender of no less then 25 years and up to 30 years.
    Gee… I wonder why SLED bowed out… (f’ing snark)

SLED investigates and brings charges, Ravenel gets 25 years… FBI investigates and brings charges, Ravenel doesn’t meet mandatory sentencing.
  • You can run
    ..but you can’t hide.

If Ravenel is convicted of distribution of cocaine, he can serve as much as 20 years in prison. I would say that it is more likely that he will cut a “plea deal” to serve a short amount of time behind bars along with probation.

If Ravenel cuts a “plea deal”, in other words, “pleads guilty” then the Feds should insist that he roll over on a “Bigger Fish” If he does not roll over, then he should do some serious jail time with the rest of the “Cocaine Distributors”.
