I Love My Home State, But…

This is sad because SC has some of the best night skies in the country and could produce countless incredible astronomers if we taught our children to look up and wonder instead of looking down their noses and judging. I know because I spent many nights in junior high and high school out in the middle of a country field in Marion County, SC looking through my telescope.

As most of you know, I’m from a dirt poor town (Mullins) in South Carolina. I love that town and my state, but we definitely do dumb things from time to time that need to be called out.

Although I went to Wofford College (a great private liberal arts college in Spartanburg, SC), I cringed when I read the latest idiocy coming out of our State House…

That?s right. In South Carolina, if you are poor or middle class and want to be educated, you can either do without, or go to a private school like BJU where you?ll learn the Earth is 6000 years old!

From what I understand, SC has always supported its great private institutions like Wofford or Furman, as long as they were accredited by a reputable agency. That seems to have been thrown out the window by the zealots in the state legislature.

I can't believe you re-publish this smut. Its garbage like this that makes midwestern yuppies feel superior. As if the majority of people in South Carolina don't think Bob Jones is looney. As if Colorado doesn't have its share of wackos -- but do we in SC go tell all Coloradoians to remove themselves from the union, hell no, we just tell you go mind your own gd business and let us live free . . .
