Google DNS vs OpenDNS

While I'm in the changing mode…

After using the excellent NameBench program for DNS speed benchmarking, I've decided to switch from Google DNS to OpenDNS for the time being (based on speed and customization options). I'm sure Google DNS will up the ante eventually, but OpenDNS is a better product and service for the time being.

I've had an OpenDNS account for a long while and used them fairly exclusively for a few months.

It's good to be back.

    I did the same thing!

Funny how place-dependent the speed of a DNS setting may be. I'm hearing GoogleDNS is much faster than OpenDNS an hour away in Asheville. I'll test it out tonight and let you know!

I didn’t think about it being place-dependent, but that makes sense. I’m still testing geotagging with the iPhone without phone service. Tomorrow I’m going on a remote hike where there is definitely no service and I’ll take several pics. My latest questions are 1) will removing the sim card in the iPhone remove more than just phone service and 2) will placing the sim card in the Google phone seamlessly transfer my data service?

Removing the SIM card will also (I'm pretty sure) disable the geo-tagging since you're relying on ATT's satellite/towers (or lack thereof in most cases) for location triangalization.  As far as the data goes, it sounds as if Google is going to enable the Google Phone to sync up automagically to your Google account when you first log in.  So, besides contacts from your phone (perhaps), there shouldn't be much worries about moving the SIM.  That's what I'm betting on since I'll certainly be getting the GPhone.

Surprisingly, it looks like my ISP is 41% faster than UltraDNS, which is faster than both OpenDNS and Google. It’s a 31ms difference, hardly noticeable in practice, but still.

I just removed my sim card, took a couple of pics, and behold, geotagging works! I was also able to use Maps, MotionX GPS, and Where To? without any problem. I did have a wireless connection at the same time, which I am sure is why Maps and Where To? worked fine.

Oh wow! Guess I was wrong then… I always just assumed geotagging was tied to the SIM.Good to know!
