Backpack and Logbook

We’re extremely proud to announce our very first app. It’s called Logbook, and it makes updating your Backpack® Journal a breeze. For a while now, we’ve been using Backpack® Journal to keep our team connected and we absolutely love it. Lately, though, we’ve been getting sick and tired of having to repeatedly open the browser to post quick status updates or completed tasks (not to mention the fact that we often forget to post anything at all). Logbook is a lightweight menubar app that enables any Backpack® user to post Journal status updates and tasks in seconds without ever opening your browser.

I’m still a fervent user of Backpack and finally got around to using Logbook today.

It’s fantastic for quick Journaling (my fav Backpack feature) from the desktop into Backpack.

My family ditched backpack in favor of google calendar. It just wasn’t worth the dough.Backpack has many business uses as well and I wish 37Signals would just merge it with Basecamp (which we use at my company). These are two products that NEED to be merged, but ironically they don’t even play nice with each other even if you wanted to pay for both (like Basecamp and Campfire do). I wonder if they’ve ever even met.Google “basecamp backpack” and you see page after page of people trying to figure out which to use, how to use both, etc., epitomized by this post by an apparent masochist who lovingly uses them both:http://blog.crankingwidgets.com/2008/11/11/basecamp-or-backback/This quote from that post sums up the ridiculousness:”Once I’m done with the research then my VA transfers Backpack to-dos into Basecamp to-dos.”Srsly?

So if I’m thinking of using Campfire with my students next semester, would you encourage me switching over to Basecamp full time instead of Backpack? That’s doable. Especially if there’s better integration between the two.

btw, do you have a Basecamp iPhone app you’d recommend?

Backpack and Basecamp both do different things, both useful. They just don’t work together very well, IMO, and have some overlap. So it depends on what you need it for. to oversimplify… Lots of content and calendars, backpack. Messages and task management, basecamp. You can try out both basecamp and campfire for free. The integration isn’t great, but at least they share logins and there’s a tab in Basecamp to campfire. That’s pretty much where the integration ends. 37Signals’ new global login trumps that though. There’s really no use for a basecamp iphone app for how we use it. I do fine with the email alerts and being able to reply through email.Ember is a fantastic campfire app which I use a LOT. That coupled with prowler to get notified when conversations start up is a killer combo.
