I'm Not Admitting Feed Reader Death Just Yet…

…but I have conceded to experimentation (like a good science teacher should).
I’ve set up a Twitter List called Sam’s News River ( http://twitter.com/samharrelson/news-river ) that I’ll be exploring and expanding over the next few days instead of relying on Google Reader for all of my feed-needs. Those needs are quite heavy as I’m definitely a freqeuent RSS binger and religiously read my 250+ subscriptions at least 5 times a day (not always facing East, however). There are a few dozen sources at http://twitter.com/samharrelson/news-river now, but I’ll be expanding and pruning that to fit my main following habits around tech, science, politics, literature and philosophy. I’m not trying to completely replicate my Google Reader subscriptions or satisfaction, but instead follow the sources of info I trust as well as finding new sources that are using Twitter wisely or creatively in the areas I outlined above. For my Twitter consumption (which is also heavy and frequent), I mainly use Tweetie 2 on my iPhone, which has superb List organization and optimization features. On my Mac, I use Seesmic Web (which also has great list implementation). To that end, relying on Twitter for “RSS” instead of Google Reader should not be insanely painful. Nevertheless, we’ll see how this experiment goes. Feel free to follow the list (even though it’ll be geared for my eclectic and often esoteric tastes, not necessarily yours) if you’d like to get a taste of either my interests or an optimized Twitter-As-RSS experience. More soon.
