Are There Really That Many Bad Teachers?

Am I just blind or are there really places where people “teach” just to get a paycheck?

How to fix our schools: A manifesto by Joel Klein, Michelle Rhee and other education leaders: “The glacial process for removing an incompetent teacher — and our discomfort as a society with criticizing anyone who chooses this noble and difficult profession — has left our school districts impotent and, worse, has robbed millions of children of a real future.”

Honestly, teaching is such a demanding yet under-paid and under-appreciated profession that I have a hard time believing there are people who view it as an easy and secure paycheck.

I have the great fortune of teaching in a small Kingdom of the Just, however, so my eyes and outlook are naive and biased towards the good.
