A Student Response to Blogger Apocalypse

Due to unforeseen events, Blogger is down. So, I’m going to be doing one blog post on here. While it may not be as colorful or amazing as my previous blog, I believe this shall hold the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, or let the higher powers smite me where I stand.

Blogger is in the middle of a lengthy down-time of apocalyptic proportions.

Unfortunately, many of my students use Blogger as their digital portfolio host. They had the choice of any blog platform (even Facebook Notes) but most still went with Blogger, which initially surprised me. However, the choice makes sense because we use Google Apps heavily here at Spartanburg Day and Blogger ties right in with their already established school accounts (and many of them have personal GMail accounts).

Last night, in the middle of the Blogger outage, was the final due date for the five tests/projects/lab reports the students wished to submit for their semester grade. So, you can imagine the weeping and gnashing of teeth when my 8th graders couldn’t post up their final reports at the last minute.

Watching them work around the outage was fascinating, as the deadline was still in place. Many turned to Facebook Notes, a few turned to WordPress and a couple turned to Google Docs (and published their pages).

The quote above is a particularly nice intro from one of my zanier students on her published Google Doc impromptu “blog.”

Maybe they learned a thing or two about the internet’s architecture and the cloud? We’ll see…

Can I guess that this zany student was Madeline? She uses the word “smite” a good bit.

  2. Jesseca says:

Win! Smite her! (Latin-lair inside joke).
