Generation Information

Trends continue uphill (and almost exponentially by age sector) towards “smartphone” adoption…

Generation App: 62% of Mobile Users 25-34 own Smartphones | Nielsen Wire: “Nielsen’s third quarter survey of mobile users reveals that while only 43 percent of all US mobile phone subscribers own a smartphone, a mobile phone with a powerful operating system, the vast majority of those under the age of 44 now have smartphones. In fact, 62 percent of mobile adults aged 25-34 report owning smartphones. And among those 18-24 and 35-44 years old the smartphone penetration rate is hovering near 54 percent.”

Smartphones should be instead labeled as information devices or mobiles because what they provide users is far beyond what we consider a “phone” device.

Accordingly, these devices are being used for far more than just a voice communication device and instead more like pocket computers. As a result, the generation that is so quick to turn to their mobile information devices rather than a laptop (which is 90% of my 7th grade students) are going to be far more comfortable searching/browsing/buying on a mobile than the 35-55 year old generation preceeding them.
