We spend close to $100,000 every minute in Iraq, but we can't afford to keep NASA's budget at its current size and ensure more incredible discoveries about our solar system (and ourselves since we are all created from stardust) from the Mars rover Spirit?
Spirit, the Mars Rover, Left to Die Before Its Time [Mars Rover]: "But now it looks like Spirit has rolled on its six wheels and ...

Thanks to Phil at BadAstronomy for the reality check...
In the new Hubble image of the galaxy M74 we can also see a smattering of bright pink regions decorating the spiral arms. These are huge, relatively short-lived, clouds of hydrogen gas which glow due to the strong radiation from hot, young stars embedded within them; glowing pink regions of ionized hydrogen (hydrogen that has lost its electrons). These regions ...

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. Richard Feynman US educator & physicist (1918 - 1988)Quote Details: Richard Feynman: There are 10^11 stars... - The Quotations Page

This is sad because SC has some of the best night skies in the country and could produce countless incredible astronomers if we taught our children to look up and wonder instead of looking down their noses and judging. The two closest celestial bodies to us are still rather close to each other from our own point of view on this Pale Blue Dot.
If you go outside tonight or tomorrow, you'll see Venus (althought it's inching away from it's closest point last week) very near a crescent Moon and it's quite beautiful.
I'll try to grab a pic on the telescope tomorrow night.

One of my favorite sites on the web, Bad Astronomy, has news of an interesting event happening tomorrow night in Georgia and Florida...
If you live in southwest Georgia or northeast Florida, on Tuesday evening April 17th at 8:56 p.m. local time, you might see the star Iota Cancri blink out as an asteroid named Xanthe passes in front of it.
As Phil points out, this is called an occultation.

On tonight's to-do list: total lunar eclipse. Totality occurs at 5:44pm ET and will last about an hour. On the east coast of the US, the moon will already be eclipsed when it rises. Best bet for seeing it is Africa, Europe, and the Middle East (see map).

Last night Anna and I went to Mellow Mushroom for pizza and drinks and then headed home around 7'ish to catch some of the Harvest Moon rising over Black Mountain to the east. It was certainly beautiful and bright! Harvest Moon in the mountains is something really special to see.
In fact, today is Pagan Pride Day at UNC Asheville to coincide with the Harvest Moon.
