Going Open Source (Again)?

So I've gotten really lax with my decision to open source as much as I can with my life as a form of my own little protest against corporate control of our content and art production. I'm typing this on a Mac while listening to DRM'd music on iTunes, so clearly I failed. However, I've been playing around with the new Ubuntu distro and it's quite compelling. It's compelling ...

Google Wants to Manage Your Ads

Uploaded with plasq's Skitch! Google has just launched another service that solidifies it's position as the online advertising leader and cuts directly into the developing market of ad inventory mangers... Welcome to Ad Manager: "Google Ad Manager is a hosted ad management solution that can help you sell, schedule, deliver, and measure all of your directly-sold and network-based inventory." In other words, Ad Manger allows small to medium sized publishers and ...

The Future is Non-Siloed Living

Chris Messina nails the importance of the coming "Open Web" as ushered in by Google's imminent OpenSocial platform: The future is in non-siloed living man! The future is in portable, independent identities valid, like Visa, everywhere that you want to be. It’s not just about social network fatigue and getting fed up with filling out profiles at every social network you join and re-adding all your friends. Yeah, those ...

Americans’ Strange Attitudes About the Internet

"It's a series of TUBESSSSS!" But seriously, we Americans are a pretty frightening lot indeed: To summarize: an alarming percentage of respondents are open to brain implants that allow them to access the internet with their minds and that allow their children's locations to be tracked, they think government censorship of online video content is acceptable, the internet makes them feel closer to God and less close their significant others ...

Gadgets I’m Loving: Nokia N800 and The Flip Camera

I just got my Nokia N800 today, and I'm in love.  In all honesty, this thing could replace my laptop. Skype, Rhapsody, wifi for my GMail, Google Docs, Google Reader, 30boxes, Twitter, an RSS reader, an email client, a music player, an FM tuner, etc.  Best of all, it's built on Linux so it's completely hackable (unlike that closed iPhone).  This is a revolutionary gadget when coupled with ...

ABC Drops Linux Support for Online Viewer

I really enjoyed catching up on shows that I missed via ABC's streaming online viewer. However, I use Ubuntu (a flavor of Linux) and now ABC has dropped it's support of that... That's just stupid.  It's a flash based player, and they are actually having to do work to exclude Linux users since it's an OS agnostic player.  Wonder how much Microsoft payed them? As the users in this Digg thread ...

Where to Go From Here?

Crazy time right now. http://www.costpernews.com/2007/01/05/dreamer-on-the-loose/ Where to go? What to do? Kill CPN or keep it alive? Questions questions questions.

Open Sourcing My Life

So with my recent adoption (and love) of Ubuntu, I've decided as part of my resolutions for 2007 that I will attempt to "open source" as much of my life as possible. The technology part is easy. Going open source in terms of transportation, clothing, food, etc is going to be the difficult part. You can keep up with my progress here.
